Copper Beech Tree
UPDATE 1/31/2015: The Copper Beech tree is now scheduled to be cut down on Saturday, January 31st. The company is going to save us a slice of the trunk.
UPDATE 1/26/2015: It turns out that the Copper Beech tree was not cut down on January 24th because of the weather. It is going to be rescheduled. We will let you know when we find out when it is rescheduled.

Oh no! There’s a tree getting cut down outside of the kindergarten playground. The tree is older than Edgewood School, and it is the giant Copper Beech tree. It is called a "Witness Tree" because it saw something important in history which was Edgewood getting built.

The tree is getting cut down because it is sick. It has a fungal disease called "heart rot" that is not treatable.

We will find out exactly how old it is when it gets cut down. Copper Beech trees can live up to 300-400 years! It is probably getting cut down on Saturday, January 24th. It’s the only tree that was there when Edgewood School was built.

We are so sad to see it go. It is devastating!!

I'm so sad to see the tree go. It is weird to think about all the things that tree has been there for...building Edgewood, putting on the cupola, all the kids that have gone to this school. Thanks, Bea, Nick and Sorin, for reporting this so quickly and letting us all know about it!
