Technology Changes Teaching at Edgewood
by Kasumi Tanaka and Sophia Wagner

Did you ever wonder what teachers think about technology, and how it has changed teaching? Here's what some of our teachers had to say:

We asked Mrs. Anders about the good and bad of the use of technology in teaching:

I think that technology has a place in learning. It can enrich and extend what students do. I believe that teachers can use technology to make a lesson more "snappy" and "magical." The positive thing about technology is that it opens up the world to everyone. But the negative thing is that relying on technology too much is bad. The internet does not always give you the correct answer! You still have to establish fact from fiction!

We asked Mrs. Pinto which technology she thinks helps students most:

The chromebooks have really been a great help this year, both with research and with writing persuasive essays. Google drive is helpful, too. And Edmodo is great because we can continue a discussion we had in class later online. When I went to school, we did not have technology like that, we had to rely on the Library! Personally, I am very comfortable with technology, because I grew up with it. But we still all had to get used to the chromebooks - new technology is an important part of learning!

We asked Mrs. O'Rourke which technology helps her the most in teaching:

The smart board has made the biggest difference to me in teaching. I can use it for writing, to project pages from a textbook, I can use the document camera to make things more easily visible. I can even go on the internet for video and sound. Personally, the computer has helped me the most. I can keep in touch with other teachers via email, I can write my report cards on the computer. And I can research any topic easily. But even though technology is good, sometimes you need balance and go back to the basics. Touching and feeling the real thing sometimes can help more than clicking!

We asked Mrs. Stokes how technology has changed the library:

Searching for books is easier with a computer, especially when you can do a Boolean Search (Power Search). The internet has also linked our library with other libraries, so now I can be in contact with other librarians and learn what they are doing. With the databases, I can also keep track of books more easily, and always know where they are, even if a teacher is borrowing a book for the whole school year.

The smart board is also a very helpful tool, as a demonstration tool for meetings, or to explain databases to students.

I was never a librarian before technology, and I'm glad about how it's helping me teach and work!

We had a lot of fun learning about how teachers use and value technology in our school. It was very interesting to go behind the scenes and learn about the personal views of our teachers! Thank you to all our interviewees!!

Great story, Kasumi and Sophia! Technology certainly has changed a lot in the time I have been at Edgewood! We can do much cooler stuff now! I can't wait for the day that a computer teaches the class while the teacher sits in the back with a nice, cold lemonade! hehehehe... Just kidding!!! :-)
