Girls Can Tech!
by Fannie Hong

Mr. Tomizawa, our technology teacher, has had an idea for a very long time: a coding club! He wishes that kids can learn the art of coding. This idea was born a few years ago, but now it is reality: the “Girls Can Tech” club!

He first put out a fill-out slip on Wednesday, January 13, 2014. It was a four-week club for girls grades 2 to 5 that meets every Friday. He, at first, wanted a club for everyone to learn to code. But then, his idea changed. He believes that kids have the ability to accomplish far more activities than just coding. But why did he make it girls only? This was one of our conversations on the very first Girls Can Tech meeting, which was on Friday, January 15.

Q: Why did you make this club girl-only?

A: There's research that indicates as girls get older, they tend to drop out of the science, math, engineering, and technology fields. And that's a shame because one day there will be a lot of jobs that need people who are imaginative, understand computer languages, and can perform the type of mathematical thinking that can solve problems and invent new things that people need. We need girls to be those people, instead of passing on the chance to be the difference.

Q: Why did you name our club Girls Can Tech?

A: Well… At first I wanted it to be called the Girls’ Coding Club. But I believe all of you have the ability to accomplish much more things beyond just Coding… So I named it Girls Can Tech, which seems like the most reasonable name.

So, it seems like Mr. Tomizawa has a problem naming our club! Do you have any ideas? If you have, post it below in comments!

In the Girls Can Tech club, Mr. Tomizawa only gives us challenges but doesn’t go, "You do this," or, "You do that," because he wants us to discover by ourselves. He said that he doesn’t want to limit our imagination.

Do you want to join the Girls Can Tech? After three more meetings, Mr.Tomizawa will choose a new group of members for the Girls Can Tech Club. If you want to be in it, make sure you keep an eye at the counter in front of the office! And who knows? You might just be one of the future members of the Girls Can Tech club!

Great to see a coding club at Edgewood! I'm also glad to see Mr. Tomizawa is giving the students the freedom to explore what they want to do with their projects. I wish they had this club when I was in school (but for boys, of course!) Great story!
